DTSP Hidden Treasures – St. Pete Sailing Center
Come Sail Away with us here in DTSP! The St. Pete Sailing Center is definitely one of the Hidden Treasures that makes Downtown St. Pete, aka DTSP, so great. Located in Demens Landings at 250 2nd Avenue SE, St. Petersburg, FL 33701, I am surprised at how few people are aware of its fantastic program. With an annual membership you can sail any day of the week except Monday. Their hours are currently Tuesday through Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. The center’s Ideal 18’s sailboats are actually 17.85 feet in length and were created to fulfill the needs of recreational sailors, such as fun one-design racing and performance day sailing. Keep in mind that you must have a friend with you to sail. Invite up to 3 friends, as these little darlings can accommodate 4 total as you sail around beautiful Downtown St. Pete.
Designed by Bruce Kirby, the Ideal was built with simplicity, comfort, and performance in mind. The Ideal’s are fast and low to the water, which makes for one exciting sail. I can taste the salt and feel the wind right now. Can’t you imagine sailing, enjoying the sun and wind, and cruising over for lunch at Fresco’s or the Vinoy?
How to get Started?
The sailing center offers an introductory sailing session for prospective members on the second Sunday of the month. You get a tour of the center and a 30 minute sail with one of their instructors. They will go over the basics for how the membership works and how the Ideal’s sail. This should be enough to whet, or wet ha-ha!, your appetite but you won’t have your sea legs just yet. If you decide to join, and you have previous sailing experience, you may be good to go. Otherwise you will have to take the introductory sailing class. This adult class is designed to teach basic sailing techniques. The basic techniques that are necessary to allow you to comfortably enjoy sailing the center’s fleet of Ideal 18’s, in fair weather conditions only. More advanced classes include: Adult Intermediate Sailing Classes, Learn to Race, and Racing with Spinnakers. The center offers a 30 Minute introductory sail with an instructor every second Sunday of the month.
So How Much Does It Cost?
The annual membership dues are $350 for an individual and $450 for a family of 4, wow that’s less than $1 a day. With your membership you receive discounts on the training courses with the adult class running $100. I think that’s a small price to pay to enjoy the natural outdoors and waterfront, make new friends, and just have a damn good time.
For families the youth programs include, board sports training, in both stand-up paddleboarding and windsurfing. Plus all day summer sailing camps, and fishing camps offered several weekends a summer. Sailing classes include the Harbor Mice level for five to seven year olds, Optimist level for eight to thirteen year olds, and finally the 420 sailing level for youths thirteen to sixteen. The Harbor Mice is a great way to get kids involved in sailing adventure, while the Optimist and the 420 level offers beginner, intermediate and advanced racing courses. Both windsurfing and stand-up paddleboarding classes are also offered.
Membership Has its Privileges.
Operated by the St. Petersburg Yacht Club, the Center is host to numerous regional and national regattas, sailing classes, adaptive sailing, summer camps, youth racing teams. The center also host several socials events throughout the year. The socials feature cookouts with great food and drinks, plus plenty of opportunities to brag about your sailing victories.
