Downtown St. Pete is home to a community that truly has a zest for enjoying life. Catering to just about everyone, there is a variety of things to do. One particular event that has been an added pleasure in early 2016 is when Cinema Squatch teamed up with Sunscreen Film Festival and brought us Movies On The Lawn at The Museum of Fine Arts. Did you know that Sunscreen Film Festival was the first organization to bring outdoor movies to DTSP over seven years ago? Together, their mission is to provide a unique cinematic experience for the community, while raising awareness for the film industry and raising money for local nonprofits.
The first season that Cinema Squatch brought the cinema to DTSP was another achievement to add to owner Ryan Tarrant’s success. This was just the beginning of what they will continue to bring to our community.
When asked what his proudest moments of the first season were, he answered by first noting the chance they had to help local nonprofits such as the MFA Education Programs, CASA and All Children’s Hospital. Tarrant is also proud of the outstanding partnerships and special guests who got involved in bringing the community together year round. Not only did DJ Fresh provide unparalleled pre-movie entertainment, but great surprise guests such as The Sandlot movie actor Shane Obedzinski, who you may know as Tommy “Repeat” Timmons from the movie, also visited Downtown St. Pete thanks to Cinema Squatch. Obedzinski commented on how much he loved the St. Pete culture and how the movie event was the coolest he attended! These partners and guests are what sets these cinematic events apart from the average outdoor movie.
What is next for Cinema Squatch? Good news – more free and fun movie events in Downtown St. Pete! DTSP Summer Cinema runs May 2016 thru September 2016 and proceeds will benefit local charity Little Light of Mine. This season will be different than the last as Cinema Squatch and Sunscreen Film Festival is amplifying the events by taking more of a themed approach with themes such as Dog Night, 80s Night, Bicycle Night, Office Party and more. Plus, rather than showcasing the movies in the same area each time, Tarrant and his team believe in showing the film love to all of the districts in Downtown St. Pete. Each movie night will be held at a unique venue that will provide a special atmosphere for the events. Enjoy the movies at NOVA 535, ARTpool Gallery and Cage Brewing!
DowntownStPete.com is proud to partner up again with Cinema Squatch, along with Sunscreen Film Festival, DJ Fresh Events, FL Print Solutions, Downtown Business Association and Grand Central District Association in the upcoming film season.
