SciCafe St. Petersburg is an informal discussion series for adults created by Secrets of the Sea Marine Exploration Center and Aquarium (formerly The Pier Aquarium) in 2009. Its purpose is to raise awareness and satisfy peoples’ curiosity about things scientific. The Dali Museum is a proud host of the 2016 Tuesday evening series.

Chef Jennie Pierola
Chef Jeannie Pierola has been a four-time James Beard Foundation Semi-Finalist (2005, 2006, 2007 & 2008) and was the first Tampa Bay area chef invited to cook at the renowned James Beard House itself, which she did in October 2015, preparing a seven-course dinner paired with wine and cocktails. Over the course of her career, she has cooked for luminaries such as former President George H. Bush and his wife, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and TV icon Oprah Winfrey. She was also selected to cook at our country’s most prestigious food industry awards ceremony, the James Beard Foundation Awards.
Dr. Vance M. Whitaker, Associate Professor, Strawberry Breeding
Dr. Vance Whitaker develops new strawberry cultivars for Florida. Through collaborative research with University of Florida researchers and others in areas, such as genomics, pathology, production techniques and post-harvest quality, strawberry breeding and selection is enhanced by the genetic characterization of traits. Dr. Whitaker works closely with the industry and oversees the Strawberry Clean Plant Program, which generates virus-tested tissue cultures of new breeding selections as a source of clean nursery stock.
