Some people have that rock star style. You know, they are edgy, hip and you idolize them, but at the same time, they keep that sleek and mysterious vibe that is simply untouchable. We have a rock star hair stylist living right here in Downtown St. Pete, Albie Mulcahy, owner of VLVT Salon, located at 538 Central Avenue. Even for us adults, he is the type of person you want to be like “when you grow up.” Albie is a true Rock-n-Roller!
Born in Boston, Mulcahy has traveled to over 35 countries for over 35 years styling and educating hairdressers in the fashion industry. He has lived in all of the major fashion capitals of the world (such as London, Tokyo, NYC, and LA), worked his magic for high-end runway shows for Prime Ministers, was friends with the late Paul Mitchell, and has even been one of the few Americans to be featured at the prestigious Alternative Hair show in London, England. He currently continues to travel around the globe to fulfill his rich and famous clients’ styling needs. (He is just that good!)
But what brought this super-chic, Billy Idol look-a-like, master hair stylist to St. Pete?
“Opportunity,” Mulcahy distinctively states.
After spending over a decade working on Madison Avenue in NYC, experiencing 9/11, the great blackout, and the passing of celebrity hair stylist, John Sahag, (who was also his dear friend and mentor), Mulcahy knew he was ready for a change of scenery.
Having lived and worked on Ocean Boulevard in South Beach, Miami in the early 90s (really, is there any place this guy hasn’t lived?), Mulcahy decided it was time to return to The Sunshine State in 2004. He experimented living in other Florida cities, but frankly, he did not love any of them until he returned to visit a friend in, you guessed it, St. Pete! At that time, there was not much going on in the city, but Mulcahy saw the potential that was perceived to be happening.
“I’m here and I’ll never go back because it’s such an amazing city!” Mulcahy says. (That’s great news, because we don’t want him to ever leave us permanently.)
Here is a little secret you may not know; Mulcahy had no intention of opening up a salon when he made St. Pete his home. However, the stars aligned and it was meant to be. Word got out that this allstar hairdresser moved into town and he soon had numerous clients who would make appointments with him in his kitchen (he explains this with a giant grin on his face. Who wouldn’t want a line of women outside their door?). Then in 2007 he opened up shop at VLVT Salon.
Albie Mulcahy is the father of one “beautiful and very cool daughter.” Her name is Veronica Jean Mulcahy, 21. Of course, when Veronica comes to visit dad, she gets her hair done at VLVT Salon while enjoying all that Downtown St. Pete has to offer, including attending rock shows together and shopping for some cool new threads.
