Downtown St. Pete has this miraculous tendency to remind us just how beautiful it is here in The Sunshine City. Seriously, the weather, waterfront views, murals, unique local restaurants and the friendly residents all create a fun and inviting vibe. Although it has a small town feel, it is still a city and with that comes a commuting dilemma. Sometimes point A to point B is too close to drive, but too far to walk. Coast Bike Share is a nifty option for residents and visitors to use on short trips in the Downtown St. Pete area.
The program launched in November 2016 with 100 bicycles at 10 hubs along the waterfront and Central Avenue. Coast Bike Share is expanding to 300 bicycles and 30 stations early 2017. Costs range from $8 an hour to $99 for annual plans and there even is a happily discounted rate for students.
St. Petersburg is the second city in the area to roll out a bike share program. Tampa beat us to it and launched the program almost 2 years ago, and quickly exceeded 10,000 members. DTSP is thrilled to join their neighbors across the bridge and share 600 bikes located at 60 hubs between Tampa and Downtown St. Pete. Some are using the program as one-way bike rides to get around their neighboring city. What’s not to love about having fun and being healthy in an environmentally friendly way?
On a chilly afternoon earlier this month, DowntownStPete.com decided to give these adorable green bicycles a ride. Here’s what we discovered:
It’s a breeze! As easy as 1, 2, 3, 4: register, release, ride, return. All you have to do is download the app “SoBi,” select the plan that works for you, find a hub and ride! On their website there are route suggestions for you to enjoy, whether you want to tour the waterfront or even view the murals. Great for tourists, visiting friends or an unplanned Sunday Funday!
“I knew Downtown St. Pete was bicycle friendly, but wow! This ride made me realize how safe it is to travel anywhere in DTSP with the bike lanes and alleyways. Add this to the umpteenth reasons why this city is one of my favorites!”
Check out the stats! Thanks Eric Trull, Regional Director of Coast Bike Share, for sharing this helpful information with us. In the first month of operation in Downtown St. Pete (November 2016), the users of the program peddled a total of 3,484 miles in 1,378 trips, averaging 1.9 miles per trip by subscription members and 2.8 miles per trip by casual users. After reviewing their data, DowntownStPete.com is proud to let you know that St. Petersburg represents over 40% of the users in 130 cities!
According to Coast Bike Share, “In the first months of operation, we expect to see a larger amount of casual users as folks test out the system. Often, this is the first time a rider has been on a bike in some time, it is not uncommon for this to exceed a decade.”
