Health crazes are appearing daily. More times than not, we have to ask ourselves if the trend is simply hype of the hipsters or actually beneficial to our wellness. One thing is for certain – cold-pressed juices are packed with pounds of fruits and veggies, which supply your body with nutrients it needs. Downtown St. Pete is home to Squeeze Juice Works. With two local locations, 675 30th Avenue North and in The Grand Central District at 18 22nd Street South, there is no excuse why you should not be enjoying what this organic and handcrafted juice company has to offer.
In January of 2013 Amy Losoya and Kelly Lessem began Squeeze Juice Works. In the early days of the business, the two women made the juice in Amy’s home and sold it in Kelly’s front yard in Downtown St. Pete. It may have started as a trend, but folks in the area quickly began to actually feel a physical improvement after consistently drinking the juices. Based on the positive community response and the support they were gaining, the two decided their company needed to expand. Less than a year later, Squeeze Juice Works opened up shop at their first location on 30th Avenue right next to Body Electric Yoga Company, another DTSP favorite. The community support definitely showed when the product was flying off the shelves so quickly that they did not even have time to restock the displays!
When you visit each store, you will be greeted with a smile by the front counter staff. Each team member is educated on the juicing process and what each product targets as far as health benefits (plus the juices are delicious!). Whether you are new to juicing or an absolute pro, the great team at Squeeze is prepared to accommodate whatever your body may need or what your little heart desires. (It is important for me to note that the staff speaks with confidence, but won’t make you feel foolish when you ask questions or don’t know the first thing about juicing. Amy and Kelly have done an exceptional job ensuring that the employees keep a positive and friendly vibe through every interaction!)
If you are interested in juicing and assume you can jump right into it from home, weigh out your options a bit first. In order to juice properly, it takes time and much more produce than you anticipate (each Squeeze juice is packed with four to six pounds of organic fruits and veggies!). Someone who is beginning at home also needs to invest in a top of the line juicer that can be a pretty penny. Instead of investing time and money into it, why not support a local business that knows what their doing?! Whether you are vegan, vegetarian, gluten free or just like yummy juice, it is a promise that Squeeze has something for you. There are many different flavors to choose from with various health benefits, (Try the Plum Crazy. With the perfect blend of plum, green apple, blueberry, lemon, lavender and chia seeds it’s “crazy good”).
Feeling like you need an extra healthful kick? Try a shot that targets specific conditions such as inflammation or digestion and helps build immunity.
Other than Amy and Kelly’s delicious juices and helpful staff, Squeeze Juice Works is passionate about remaining a low impact company as they recycle everything possible. For example, after juicing about 300 pounds of vegetables, the store is left with five to six giant tubs of pulp that they package up and folks in the community pick it up for composting. If you do not compost, you can still help recycle by bringing in the glass bottle your juice comes in once you are done with it. You will receive a ten-cent refund and Squeeze will sterilize it and put it back to work.
