Truth be told, there are plenty of words used to “fluff-up,” so to speak, descriptions of hotels. For example, allow me to bring to your attention that “vintage” cannot be used to describe a building that is simply “old.” The word vintage comes with a touch of maturity and enduring appeal. That being said, are you looking for the perfect hotel to rest your head in Downtown St. Pete, perhaps something that has character, a vintage feel, but is not old and musty? Look no further! The Courtyard by Marriott St. Petersburg Downtown (www.historiccourtyardstpete.com), located at 300 4th Street North, fluffs-up one thing: your pillows.
In 1925, The Pennsylvania Hotel was built in Downtown St. Pete. This, being one of the few hotels in the area, was where some wealthy snowbirds would call home during the summer and catered to Major League Baseball Legends, such as Babe Ruth. (Did you know that The New York Yankees held spring training in St. Pete during the majority of 1914 thru 1961?) It was of the highest quality then and it is still top-notch now.
Marriott took the property over in 2006, completely renovated it, and is now known as The Courtyard St. Petersburg Downtown. This place is special because it has been brought into a new century with a modern feel, but some of the original touches still remain. Wait until you see the marble staircase in person and even the elevator pointer is original! Marriott added about forty rooms (the architects decided to knock down adjoining walls in existing rooms to make them larger than they originally were in the 20s), an indoor pool, and an exercise facility. But wait, there’s more! You will feel at home in the living room style lobby and enjoy breakfast with freshly brewed Starbucks coffee or dinner with a glass of wine or beer in the American bistro.
What really sets The Courtyard St. Petersburg Downtown apart from other hotels in the area? One thing that I noticed when I stayed there was that the cleanliness was immaculate. I am the type of person who runs their finger across tops of shelves and along the molding of a wall to see if it is dusty. I did just that, and I found no dust or dirt! Yes, the building is almost 100 years old, so there is absolutely a little age to it, but the staff does a lovely job at keeping it tidy.
Yes, plenty of hotels offer free wifi, flat screen TVs, coffee makers and mini-fridges, but rarely do I stay in a room that also has a microwave. This is convenient if you take a doggy bag back with you after eating out at one of Downtown St. Pete’s restaurants, or if you grab a quick snack at the 24/7 market in the hotel’s lobby. The market and the microwave came in handy when I enjoyed a few drinks and an Uber ride back to the hotel after I attended a beautiful wedding at historic venue NOVA 535 in July. Also, can I mention how comfortable my king-size bed was? I sprawled out over the plush pillows and woke up, completely rested, eight hours later after a delightful slumber.
Whether you are traveling for business to work or leisure to relax, The Courtyard St. Petersburg Downtown, located less than a mile away from The Dali and a quick walk to Bay Shore Drive and Central Avenue, has all of the amenities you are looking for including a business center, meeting spaces, and a free shuttle service.
