We are on the cusp of the 89th Oscars. The question is.: Who will be thanking the Academy this year? Casey, Ryan, Natalie, Meryl?! You may be a die-hard movie buff who knows the ins and outs of huge box-office hits, indie films and even foreign flicks; perhaps you simply love people watching and seeing what those celebrities are wearing or, if you are anything like myself, you absolutely adore laughing with Jimmy Kimmel (the host of the 2017 Oscars). Whoever you are, or whatever your taste may be – there is one place in Downtown St. Pete to watch The 89th Academy Awards – in true Hollywood style. The Sunscreen Film Festival and Tampa Bay Film Society have partnered to bring the 1st Annual Oscars Viewing Event at stunning NOVA 535 on Sunday, February 26, 2017 – 7:30 pm – 11:30 pm. More about Ryan Tarrant and his involvement in the film community:
My interest in film started in the 80s and grew into a passion through the 90s. Directors like Spielberg, Tarrintino and actors like Christian Slater, Robert Englund and Kurt Russell were huge inspirations. I was Infatuated with sci-fi and horror films. When I moved to St. Pete, I experienced The Sunscreen Film Festival and my infatuation for those 80s and 90s cult classic films grew to independent film. Independent film offers something different than what I grew up falling in love with; it provides harsh and edgy stories about contemporary society. I believe that independent film has a place in St. Petersburg and Florida not only as a really cool version of visual art, but also an opportunity to have an economic impact on our region and state. We as a film society are doing everything we can to celebrate film, this Oscars event will be one of those celebrations. (Learn more about Ryan and his healthy obsession with bowties and bourbon).
